- Ballpark number , Ballpark figure ; 어림잡은 수치, 대략적인 수치

It's just a ballpark figure. I don't know exactly how many people will be attending the event.

Please, give me a ballpark figure, like just ballpark.

 

- By the book ; 엄격하게 규칙이나 법을 잘 따르는

We told our auditors that we do everything by the book.

We've done everything by the book with little success and we find ourselves in huge debt.

I'd love to help you, but my hands are tied.

At some point, your hands are tied and there's no further you can go.

 

- In the driver's seat ; 어떤 상황에 대한 컨트롤, 권력, 결정권을 가지고 있는

There are in the driver's seat.

She decides what will be done. She's in the driver's seat.

When we provide a loan, the countries are in the driver's seat.

 

- Learn the ropes ; 어떤 일의 기본을 배우다.

I'm learning the ropes in my new position.

First year, you start a new job, you're just trying to learn the ropes, figure out how to do it well.

 

- A no-brainer ; 당연한 결정 (뇌를 쓰지 않아도 될 정도로)

That's a no-brainer.

Making money first is a no-brainer.

So this decision sounds like a no-brainer because it was cheaper than fossil fuel.

 

- Pay through the nose ; 공정한 가격보다 지나치게 비싸게 지불하다.

I think we paid through the nose for our car.

You have to pay for the service. You don't have to pay through the nose.

 

- Talk someone into something ; 누군가가 무엇을 하도록 확신시키다, 설득하다.

I was reluctant to redesign our website, but my colleagues talked me into it.

I remember having this really weird day with her and we talked her into doing SNL pretty easily.

And often, it's those beoken pieces that really help you have the opportunity to think out of the box and to grow.

 

Business as usual ; 원래 하던 방식대로 일을 하다. (평소와 같지 않은 상황에 사용)

Apart from being under new management, it's business as usual in the department.

Or, they will just take a superficial, one-off approach, hopping that they can return back to business as usual.

I will touch base with the marketing team and figure out how things are going.

I didn't look that deepy in the numbers, but I'm sure we can have an economist touch base with you about that.

 

An uphill battle ; 힘겨운 싸움

Convincing my boss will be an uphill battle. 

And I'm fighting a teriible uphill battle that I may, in a few months, decide to just quit because they're really against it.

 

I have leverage over someone ; 영향을 끼칠만한 유리한 점을 가지다.

Don't worry, it will be fine. We have some leverage over her.

Secondly, China has a lot of leverage over North Korea.

Have/get/gain the upper hand ; 다른 누구보다 더 힘을 가지다.

It was easy to see who had the upper hand.

I'm not letting anybody have the upper hand on me.

 

word of mouth ; 입소문, 구전 마케팅

We get most of our work by word of mouth.

We get most of our clients through/by word of mouth recommendations.

The stories were told not just on the website, which is less emotional, but through video and through word of mouth.
